Tendon collagen mRNA expression and tendon collagen protein synthesis increased by 3.9‐fold and 1.3‐fold, respectively (P < 0.01 and P= 0.02), and muscle collagen mRNA expression and muscle collagen protein synthesis increased by 2.3‐fold and 5.8‐fold, respectively (P < 0.01 and P= 0.06). Myofibrillar protein synthesis was unaffected by elevation of GH and IGF‐I.

Results

The increase in GH levels caused a rise in plasma IGF-I, insulin, glucose, and free fatty acids. Additionally, GH led to a shift in fuel selection, with less carbohydrate and leucine being burned and more fat being used. GH also increased muscle mitochondrial ATP production rate and citrate synthase activity. Additionally, GH led to an increase in the mRNA levels of various proteins, including those involved in IGF-I production, mitochondrial function, and glucose transport. However, GH did not seem to have an effect on muscle mitochondrial protein synthesis rates.

This study investigated the effects of anabolic steroids on muscle fiber size and strength. The results showed that athletes who use anabolic steroids get larger and stronger muscles, but the mechanism by which this occurs is not yet known.

Anabolic steroids are substances that promote muscle growth and strength. While they have some adverse health effects, they are being considered for the treatment of cachexia associated with chronic disease states, and to address loss of muscle mass in the elderly. In sport, anabolic steroids are considered performance enhancers. Designer steroids have been synthesized in an attempt to circumvent doping tests, but these agents are still detectable and can result in health problems.

Methods

The muscle biopsies of high-level power lifters who have reported the use of anabolic steroids in high doses for several years were compared to those of high-level power lifters who have never used these drugs. The results showed that the muscle fibers of the power lifters who had used anabolic steroids were smaller, and there were fewer myonuclei and satellite cells. The muscle fibers of the power lifters who had never used anabolic steroids were larger, and there were more myonuclei and satellite cells.

Results

The muscle fiber composition was the same in both groups, but the reported steroid users had larger areas for each fiber type, more myonuclei, and a higher frequency of fibers expressing developmental protein isoforms.

Conclusion

The use of anabolic steroids and strength-training can lead to an increase in muscle size, possibly through the activation of satellite cells. Satellite cells are cells that help repair and regenerate muscle tissue; the incorporation of these cells into muscle fibers may promote muscle growth. It is possible that genetic differences between those who use steroids and those who don't may account for some of the variation in muscle size.
