DHEA is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. The body converts DHEA to male and female hormones, including testosterone and estrogen. DHEA levels peak during a person's 20s and then decline with age. DHEA supplements are used for a variety of purposes, such as for improving athletic performance, increasing energy and strength, reducing fat, and improving memory. These supplements are also sometimes used for treating sexual dysfunction, depression, and osteoporosis.
DHEA is sometimes used as an alternative or supplement to hormone replacement therapy (HRT). A number of studies have shown that taking DHEA may improve sexual function in women going through menopause or experiencing other hormone-related problems.
